The history of computer ethics goes way back to the 1940s where Norbert Weiner, who was an MIT professor and a pioneer in computing and created cybernetics. Cybernetics was a system for getting feedback of information and predicted that unemployment which was greater than the great depression was predicted by him. However, it was not paid any attention to and ignored for many years.
In the 1950s, Norbert Weiner brought out a book titled the Human Use of Human Beings and this made him a founder of computer ethics since he was believed to have laid the foundation for computer ethics. Another person also from the MIT, Joseph Weizenbaum wrote a program known as ELIZA which made the computer behave like a psychotherapist.
The year 1966 also saw the very first crime through computer when a programmer used a computer code stop his bank account from being termed as overdrawn; however it was found that this crime was not charged by the law. In same year, the Freedom of Information Act was adopted that gave the authority to individuals and other organizations the right to access data that was in the possession of the federal government. The 1960s saw a lot of developments including the creation of the ethics code for the field of computer technology, it was done by the author of computer crimes, Donn Parker. Thus, was the beginning of computer ethics which has been developed and adopted over the years.
